Mapo Tofu / Spicy Minced Meat & Tofu

Pabs Kitchen is cooking spicy and delicious today which is minced meat and Tofu with a blend of Chinese and Nepalese spices. This is a type of mix dish recipe, for example you can call Mapo Tofu or in Nepal is Curry. Which is I use typical Chinese broad bean chili paste and Sichuan pepper that is a delicacy from Sichuan province in China and Nepalese spices like Turmeric, Cumin powder, Garam Masala etc. To make this dish tastier I fried the minced meat then cook in spices. It becomes amazingly tasty that gives you a complete satisfaction to your appetite.

Serves 4 to 5


350 grams Pork minced meat or Beef

250 grams Tofu, chopped into 1 inch cubes

1 tbsp Broad Bean chili paste (buy from Chinese store)

2 tbsp Chili oil

8 cloves of minced Garlic

1 Red Onion

1-inch minced Ginger

2 large minced fresh Chilies

3 stems of finely spring Onion

1 tsp Cumin powder

½ tsp Turmeric powder

½ Black pepper

½ tsp Timur / Sichuan pepper

6 to 7 tbsp vegetable Oil or preferable one

1 tbsp Corn Starch, mix with 4 tbsp water

2 cups hot water for the sauce

Salt to your taste

½ tsp Garam Masala optional

1 tsp Sesame Oil optional

If you like, season with roasted sesame seeds, chopped spring onion and a few drops of chili Oil as you prefer.

How to make:

Prepare all the ingredients above chopping and cutting.

Chopped Tofu gently transfer into a strainer. In a large bowl put in boiling hot water and tofu strainer. Then soak it for 10 minutes. Make sure the Tofu is covered by the water.

Next, to fry the minced meat, heat it up a pan, put in 2 to 3 tbsp of Oil, after the oil gets slightly hot, add in minced meat, mix evenly breaking the fibers, keep the heat on a medium low, it is easy to separate the mince this way.

After the minced looks with the sweat, increase up the heat to medium, add in Turmeric, Salt, Black pepper, combine them very well and cook it until all the water dries away from it and minced looks fluffy, nice looking. It takes about 8 to 10 minutes then transfer all to a plate.

Next, again, heat a pan, add in Oil and after the oil gets slightly hot, add in minced garlic, Ginger, Chilies, and the Sichuan pepper, cook a minute while stirring, keep heat on medium.

After a minute, add in onion, stir it, and cook it for 3 minutes. When the onion looks slightly soft, add in Turmeric, black pepper, cumin powder, Broad bean Chili paste, Chili oil and Salt, combine them very well and cook them about a minute. The heat should be on medium high.

Now it is time to add in the cooked minced meat, combine it well for about a minute. After, put in 2 cups of hot water, mix it well, if you are putting in cold water then wait to boil. After it boils, lid on, and let it simmer for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, remove the Tofu from the water and make liquid of corn starch and water, set aside.

After 15 minutes lid off, mix lightly, we can see the sauce has been reduced, now add in liquid corn starch.

Before adding the Tofu, add in the chopped spring onion, mix, and the Tofu in. Be gentle while mixing it, lid on, I´m letting it cook for 5 minutes. If you are using it fresh without soaking it in hot water, then cook for 10 minutes.

After five minutes of cooking the dish is ready. The Tofu looks succulent in creamy sauce. Season with a bit of Sesame oil and Garam masala, this is optional, but it does add richness to the dish. Combine it very well gently. Turn off the heat then wait about 10 minutes before serving. Then it is ready!

Transfer it into a serving bowl if you like, and sprinkle chopped spring onion, roasted Sesame seeds and Chili Oil.

You can enjoy with your preferable carb like rice, noodles etc. Happy cooking!!
